Boardman bikes are the new kids on the block of the British Cycling industry scene, a large and varied range of road performance, sport, CX and hybrid bikes has seen Boardman slot nicely into the UK market.
Boardman bikes is the brainchild of legendary British time trialist and individual pursuit rider, Chris Boardman. Boardman’s 8 year professional career Chris won the Tour de France prologue an impressive three times, wearing the Tour’s yellow jersey on each occasion. Chris also has Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championship medals to his name. Now a commentator, pundit and performance coach, Boardman remains an eminent force in British Cycling.
From their chart topping AiR 9.8 to their introductory Sport Performance steed, Boardman are clearly aiming to take a run at the entire road market. The road range can be divided into four bike types.
The AiR range are Boardman’s highly advanced aero road machines; from the top of the range AiR 9.8 to introductory 9.0 equipment specification is high. The 9.0 comes with Shimano Ultegra and starts at a hugely competitive £1,999.99.
The SLR range is Boardman’s climbing machine, with a sub-900g frame the top of the range SLR9.8 comes with full SRAM Red and Zipp 202 wheels but weighs in at a smidge under £5.5k, further down the range the SLR 9.0S comes with Shimano Di2 and is a much more wallet friendly £2,600.
Sponsorship of the GB Mountain Biking squad has helped Boardman develop their range of cross-country and all mountain bikes. Their line-up includes a team carbon machine, 29er line up and FSPRO all mountain rides.
Boardman’s real strength appears to be putting the right bike into the right price point in the market. A series of highly successful athletes have been brought into the Boardman camp, these include Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, current Ironman World Champion Pete Jacobs and GB Mountain Biker Annie Last.
Halfords are Boardman’s main UK stockist, providing a central point of collection for Boardman. This is however, one area of caution for those of you looking at Boardman bikes. Halford’s service quality in cycling does vary significantly, so we would advise having your Boardman set up by your local friendly bike shop, just for a double check.
